In 2022, the industry contributed over $56 billion to the state’s GDP and employed more than 420,000 Tennesseans—representing nearly 15% of all jobs in the state. Employment in advanced energy has risen by 6.8% since 2019, while business establishments have expanded by 10.9%.

East Tennessee is at the forefront of this growth. In Oak Ridge, projects like a uranium enrichment facility and advanced centrifuge manufacturing are set to create hundreds of jobs. Knoxville, TN is pushing boundaries with fusion energy research at the former Bull Run Fossil Plant, the expansion of solar power in Maryville, and nuclear education programs at L&N STEM Academy. The region is also home to the Spark CleanTech Accelerator, which nurtures startups focused on sustainability.
